One Hit Wonders 7/8
Now You Are God’s People. The author writes to people for whom God’s merciful selection is new, and delicious (“if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good,” v. 3). And so he exhorts them to remember that theirs is not an individual project, but that their identity is collective. In partnership with Jesus, the “living stone,” they themselves become living stones, built together into a place of worship – not a building but a people. “Once you were not a people” – there was no community, no solidarity, no companionship for life’s journey. But God’s mercy includes the gift of community. Thanks be to God.
